Social networking is considered a very big aspect in

When looking at the article “How Obama Really Did It” by David Talbot, it shows how thanks to social networking more people got involved and more things were done in less time and that is how he practically got more votes. It is very thrilling that all these messages, emails and pictures could be sent all over the world in a flash of a second to anyone.

However there are issues that were touched upon in on the PBS presentation that demonstrated how much influence "social networking " has on students of different ages. For the most part it shows all the negative view because of the social networking students become addicted to the computers so much that they spend most of their time chatting online. Also in this way they spent less “quality time“ with their families and more time isolated in their rooms chatting away. Then there was an example of how girls wanted to attract attention and fame by posting their half naked pictures on websites such as Facebook and Myspace.
Another very negative and disturbing problem is how over the net people could be convinced to commit crimes such as suicide and many others. There was an example in the PBS presentation where one student committed suicide by communicating with another male friend on the net.I believe that social networking cuts down the person from the real world instead of going outside and breathing fresh air and meeting people in person. I believe that computers should be used for the school projects and email and exchange of some information however there should be a balance in between the two.

There should be a balance between the real world and the social networking world because we have to identify the difference between real world and the social networking world.

How does someone become convinced to commit a crime through the internet? I understand if kids are able to research the internet on how to do so, but to say it makes them do it just doesn’t make sense. I do agree however, that kids should be forced to use the internet, strictly e-mail though, for school. It allows the teacher bring the classroom home as well as the students. I believe that kids should spend time on the internet but be limited in how much of it they can spend. With your final statement on the real world and the social networking world, I think what you mean is that you need to identify the difference between the two before you can regulate and/or balance it.
ReplyDeleteYou make a valid point on the negatives of social networking but websites like facebook and myspace have just become mediums for these kids. Kids may feel offended by some of the things other classmates or friends write about him/her but how does this change from what kids tell each other at school? Is bullying on the playground any different from cyberbullying? But, i do agree with you that kids are spending too much time on these sites and i believe that this is a job the parents should take control of.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that social network is a major aspect in everyones life. Like everything else, it has its pros and cons. Yes children should use the ineternet strictly for school purposely and educational use however, i don't believe that the internet in a way convinces them to commit suicide. Sure it aides in promoting constant antagonizement from the bullies butits different than the internet being the direct source of suicide. Parents need to be aware of what there kids are doing and who they are talking to. Overall you brought some valids points to the table.
